Welcome

Welcome Peer Coaches!

Join the College of Dupage Writing and Reading Center Blog. This blog is for you.

All of you have been doing a wonderful job this semester. So far we have had over 300 appointments in the 5 short weeks we have been open. There are 2 main resons for this. The students really like the help that you have been giving them, and WCOnline has made it so very easy for them to schedule their appointments.

I would like you to use this blog to discuss the day to day going on in the center. ..your joys and your challenges.

Be sure to check this once a day if you can, Monday-Thursday, and post on it.

Have a great week,

Helen

Hi helen, and everyone else.
I was going to try and post the minutes for our meeting this past Wed., but I'm having trouble authoring a post.

perhaps you set the blog up for us to communicate through comments mad to the original postings you make, helen?

I'm not sure how to create a new post, the only options I have are to read helen's post or to comment on it?

I'll do the minutes as an email for those that missed the meeting, but if anyone has better luck than me creating a new post, let me know!

I wasn't sure how to post either so I ended up creating a new blog account (no idea what to do with it), and now I'm commenting...

Sabrina - thanks for taking the time to do meeting minutes!

Alicia - thanks for the great story about Prof. Satan. For those who weren't at the meeting, she had a difficult session with a student who kept referring to his instructor as "Satan" and then kept trying to pit Alicia against the instructor.

Anyway, it's made me aware and has me thinking about some of the challenges faced by some of our coaches. Since younger clients tend to regard me the same way they would an instructor or parent, I haven't had to think about how to establish authority with a client. Now, I'm wondering if any of our other younger coaches feel as if age has been a factor during a difficult session, and how they handled it.

I have invited every one to the blog. I didn't know I was supposed to before. this is new to me. Now perhaps the others will read this and post to it.

Jackie,

You are right about presenting oneself as an authority. All of the coaches do have authority in the writing and reading center because of your training. If you like, we can talk about this at the next meeting during the inservice.

Hi gang,

Sorry I'm posting my comments late.
I just had to register for a Google
account in order to access this blog.

I think that this is going to be a very useful tool. Although, I'd have to say that it would be useful
if we could figure out how to make another posting. Maybe we could discuss this at the next meeting on October 23rd.

I don't have any concerns to report
just yet. Joe and I had a light schedule on Thursday night. We each had two students and one walk-in. I took her. We registered her for an account since this was her first time for the semester. If any issues come up, I'll let you all know. Y'all take care and have a good weekend.

Jackie et al.,
Your musing about how age can be a factor with students of certain cultures made me remember one student who only wants to work with female tutors. So far it's working out - I told her which of the tutors' names were 'male' and which were 'female' (since you can't always tell with foreign names - what would we do if we were in China?).

Is there perhaps a way to 'flag' certain students on the rich36 website as having a certain tutor gender/age preference? or maybe just a sticky note on their folders? Oh well, for now it'll probably be just word of mouth.

Sabrina et al.,

How to post? Just go to the upper right corner of the blog 'home' and click "New Post." Silly me, I just noticed it a moment ago. Make up a witty, grammatically correct title and "Publish post" at the bottom!

Hi all,

I do have a concern that I wish to bring up now. I noticed on the rich 36 website log-in page that the time we are going to be open on the in-service day is 9:30-2:00.
Originally, Prof. Szymanski told us we'd be open from 9:00-2:00. Which is correct?

Some more questions/notes for our next meeting:

I am in the process of making travel plans for Thangsgiving and I am wondering if we'll be on Wednesday, Nov. 21st.

Would it be possible to post a note on the log-in page of rich36 that reminds students to fill in their instructor's name and class info when they schedule appointments?

Posting??? Still not sure how to do that. Do we have to be invited to the blog?

To everyone who may not know how to post:

1. Go to the COD Writing & Reading Center Home Page by clicking on the "COD Writing & Reading Center" blue text link.

2. There is a blue bar at the very top of the screen where you will see your email address. Click the "New Post" button to the right of your email.

3. Post.

Thanks Joe! Sometimes I explain things too fast - your explanation of how to post is much better.

Perhaps someone (yes, I know, one of you will probably volunteer me - OK if you do) could make a "how-to" post on things like how to post, edit one's profile, and so on. Then again, that might be redundant.

I vote for Hannah to make a "how to" list. :)
